The Remarkable Achievements At The 1968 Olympics In Mexico City

The 1968 Olympics in Mexico City were the first of these Games to be staged by any developing nation. There were many amazing performances in these Games.

In long jump event, Bob Beamon made a jump of 8.90 meters. This astonishing record bettered the earlier world record by 55 centimeters. This feat stood firmly till 1991 and at this time Mike Powell broke it.

American athletes shined at these Games. Jim Hines set the world record in 100 meters. Lee Evans bagged the gold in 400 meters with world record performance.

Dick Fosbury bagged the gold at high jump event. He used a new technique called Fosbury flop. This technique soon became quite dominant in this event.

America’s Al Oerter won his fourth gold medal at the Olympic Games consecutively in discus throw. He became the first athlete in track and field to win the gold medal at single individual event for the fourth time in a row at the Olympics.
